Avocets
This is one of two Avocet chicks we discovered to our delight in the Martinez wildlife preserve.
Both of the chicks crossing to the other side of the pond. They are probably just a couple of weeks old.
Practicing its latest Karate kick.
Mom stays close to her two chicks. (Female's beak has an upward tilt at the end)
Whenever a potential predator approaches they call out to warn the mate and the chicks.
The male together with young. Male's beak is longer and only slightly curved.
This is the lone surviving chick about a week after our first sighting.
The parents were usually watching at posts 20 to 50 yards apart, with the chick closer to one of them.
In the same vicinity we found this group of avocets.
